Vancouver Island Vision is taking you to the Campbell River Estuary! The Campbell River Estuary and Baikie Island Reserve is a beautiful spot to come view the scenery and take a nice walk with your dog. Since the early 1900’s, the estuary has been a hub for industrial activity. Forestry activities dominated the shoreline with milling and transporting logs harvested from Vancouver Island. The Campbell River Sawmill processed the logs and provided the surrounding areas with high quality lumber. These activities grew and supported the economy of Campbell River. Unfortunately, these activities took a toll on the natural environment of the Estuary. In 2000, the Nature Conservancy of Canada purchased the former Sawmill site. This created partnerships with the City of Campbell River, and many others, who came together in an extensive restoration of the Mill Pond and Baikie Island.
